Ohio SR-22 Filing Basics After an OVI or Lapse
Who needs an SR-22 in Ohio
The Ohio BMV requires an SR-22 after an OVI conviction, driving without proof of financial responsibility, 12 points in two years, or an unpaid judgment.
Filing period
Ohio typically requires 3 years, but 5 years is common for repeat OVI or noncompliance suspensions.
Minimum liability
$25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident, $25,000 property damage.
Random verification
Ohio randomly selects drivers and asks them to prove coverage. Failing that check means a 90-day suspension plus an SR-22 requirement.
Non-owner policies
The BMV accepts non-owner SR-22 filings when no vehicle is registered to you.
