Tennessee SR-22 requirements

The Tennessee Department of Safety requires an SR-22 after a DUI conviction, driving on a revoked or suspended license, an at-fault uninsured accident, an unsatisfied judgment, or repeated failures under the state's insurance verification program.

Minimum liability limits

Tennessee raised its minimums to 25/50/25 effective January 2023. Older policies written at the previous 25/50/15 level no longer satisfy an SR-22 filing.

DUI penalties

A first Tennessee DUI carries a minimum 48 hours in jail, a one-year revocation, DUI school, a victim impact panel, and an ignition interlock for restricted driving privileges. The SR-22 covers the financial responsibility piece only.

Nashville, Memphis, and Knoxville

Rates vary sharply by metro. Memphis is consistently the most expensive market in the state for SR-22 drivers, while smaller East Tennessee markets run well below the average.

Tennessee SR-22 FAQs

How long is an SR-22 required in Tennessee?

Three years for most drivers, measured from reinstatement. Repeat DUI convictions and certain revocations can extend it to five years.

Does Tennessee require an ignition interlock after a DUI?

Yes. Tennessee requires an interlock for a first DUI in most circumstances, including any case with a BAC of .08 or higher where the driver seeks a restricted license.

What is Tennessee's insurance verification program?

Tennessee electronically verifies liability coverage on registered vehicles. A failed verification generates escalating notices, fines, and eventually a suspension requiring an SR-22.

Can I keep my Tennessee SR-22 if I move out of state?

The obligation stays with your Tennessee record. You will generally need a carrier licensed in your new state that will still file a Tennessee SR-22 until the term ends.
