Florida no-fault insurance

Florida is a no-fault state: every registered vehicle needs $10,000 PIP and $10,000 PDL. Here is what that covers, and what it does not.

  • $10,000 Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
  • $10,000 Property Damage Liability (PDL)
  • Same-day coverage and electronic DHSMV filing when required
  • Low down payments with monthly installments

What the no-fault law requires

Under Florida's no-fault system your own PIP coverage pays your medical bills after a crash no matter who was at fault. The state requires two coverages on every registered vehicle:

  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP) — $10,000
  • Property Damage Liability (PDL) — $10,000

What no-fault does not cover

PIP pays a percentage of your medical costs up to the limit and nothing toward another driver's injuries. Bodily injury liability is a separate coverage, and Florida only forces you to carry it once a filing is ordered against your license.

When a filing changes your minimums

A suspension for driving without insurance or too many points brings an SR-22 filing. A DUI brings an FR-44 at 100/300/50 limits — ten times the no-fault property damage requirement. Both must stay continuously in force.

Frequently asked questions

What does Florida no-fault insurance cover?

Florida's no-fault law requires $10,000 of Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and $10,000 of Property Damage Liability (PDL). PIP pays your own medical bills regardless of who caused the crash.

Is 10/20/10 the same as no-fault?

10/20/10 describes bodily injury and property damage liability limits. Florida's baseline requirement is PIP and PDL of $10,000 each; bodily injury liability is only mandatory once a filing such as an SR-22 or FR-44 is ordered.

Does no-fault coverage satisfy an SR-22 or FR-44?

No. An SR-22 requires liability limits above the no-fault minimum, and a Florida FR-44 after a DUI requires 100/300/50. The filing must be attached to the policy by the carrier.

Can I buy a no-fault policy the same day?

Yes. Coverage can start immediately and any required state filing is transmitted electronically to the DHSMV.
