1. The filing fee
Insurers charge a one-time fee — commonly $15 to $50 — to transmit the SR-22 to the state. It is charged per filing, not per month.
2. The premium
This is where the money goes. Rates depend on your state, the violation, your age, ZIP code, vehicle and how many carriers will write your record. Two drivers with the same conviction can be quoted very different prices, which is why shopping matters.
Ways to pay less
- Compare several high-risk carriers rather than accepting one quote
- Use a non-owner policy if no vehicle is registered to you
- Drop comprehensive and collision on an older vehicle
- Never let the policy lapse — a restart costs far more than any discount saves
